Soft Crate

I plan to purchase a yorkshire terrier pup. What is more preferable, a soft crate or small kennel?

It really depends on what you plan to use it for. For my puppy, I have both. I’ll give you the run-down on the differences.

If you go with the “kennel” I would reccomend getting a metal one for a couple of reasons.

1) They’re generally less expensive than the plastic ones.
2) Teething puppies can’t chew on them.
3) They have more air flow which translates to less stink (after all they sleep in there)
4) On most the bottom tray can come out so if your puppy does have an accicent it’s easier to clean up.
5) It will fold down flat if you want to move it somewhere.
6) petdreams.com sells really cute accessories to make it feel homey and still look stylish (the kits come with a mat, bumper, and cover)

The only disadvantage that I see to these is that the larger ones can be heavy.

The soft crates are nice too. There useful, but again it depends on what you’re going to use it for.

1) They’re NOT meant for dogs that have not been crate trained. If they have a accident it WILL be hard to clean up.
2) They’re not meant for any dog that is going to be left in there for an extended period of time unattended. A dog is a dog, and they’re only zippers.
3) They’re really nice for travel. I’ve heard they’re especially nice if you take you dog to dog shows. They’re light and easy to pack (they usually come with their own carrying case.)

In the end, they’re both going to work. I would suggest a metal crate because that’s what works for my pup, but I’m sure you’ll have success with whatever you choose.

Just remember, no matter how much the pup cries on the first few nights DON’T GIVE IN!!! Make him stay in there. If you do think he has to go to the bathroon… wait until he stops barking before you take him out. Otherwise he’s training you!
