Harness and leash question for small dog?

o.k. granted we’ve had the puppy 1 week. The harness is a pain in the butt! To get this squirmy guy into it quickly enough to make it outside to train him is too much! I’ve started to just grab him and go out. The good news is training is going fine. Bad news he hasn’t been taught ‘come” yet and wanders further and further. Now he won’t do his business while in the harness and doesn’t move when on his leash. looking ahead to obedience training I can’t ever put a collar and leash on him. (collapsing trachea common in the breed)What is the equivalent to a leash correction?

I own Chihuahuas. They are also a breed “prone” to collapsing trachea. All mine wear collars and are trained to walk without pulling. I feel from my own experience that a harness gives you less control over the dog. A harness was originally developed for a dog to pull against (think sled dogs). Unless your breed is short muzzled, you might consider a head collar instead. You have more control and they don’t pull against their neck. A dog will pull against pressure (that is if the pressure is pulling them back they pull forward). A head collar work by producing pressure pulling forwards so they pull back (right back to where you want them). Or you could try a Halti (a device to keep the dog from pulling against the leash).

As for getting them used to wearing anything. Put it on in the house and LEAVE it on them. Collar, leash, harness whatever. They will get used to it. Also if you get a chance to watch Cesar Milan in the Dog Whisperer, it is helpful. A few controlled sounds and leash corrections on a collar can get your dog to walk without pulling without putting the neck at risk.
