Where any of the Pit Bull type dogs ever bred SPECIFICALLY for dog fighting or dog aggression?

I find that very hard to believe seeing as they are such sweet dogs and I have seen MANY live in a home with multiple dogs happily. I’m beginning to think this is a misconception.

If they weren’t bred for fighting/aggression, will somebody please tell me what they WERE bred for? Weight pulling seems to make more sense to me than dog aggression.

The original bulldog was bred to fight animals in the pits (bull, bears, etc), but when that was outlawed, they then were bred for dog fighting. When dog fighting was outlawed, many people thought the bulldog would go extinct, so they crossed the bulldog (which looks nothing like today’s bulldog) with terriers. Out came an all purpose working dog, the pit bull terrier.
In America, a man saw a group of tough, rugged, healthy, all-purpose working dogs. He noticed that the best workers also had the best temperament, so he began breeding pits and created a breed standard. First the UKC recognized the American Pit Bull Terrier and then the AKC recognized the American Staffordshire Terrier and pits became the ultimate family dog and companion, but in the mid 1900’s, dog fighting reemerged and then the pit bull became an outlaw and those involved in that activity bred them for fighting once again.
Many pit bulls can live happily with other dogs if the owners are competent and know how to control their dog. Some great ways to build a bond and gain control over your dog is through high level obedience work (not your Petsmart classes). I know many pits that live happily with other dogs. I know some that I would never let my dog go near. If I owned a pit (which I plan to in the future), I would never let him/her go to a dog park because if another dog starts a fight (which happens a lot there) my pit will be blamed even if it’s not his fault. I will not set my dog up to fail.
Today pits are bred for many reasons. One reason is dog fighting, but others include weight pull, narcotics detedtion, cadavar detection, and bomb detection. They excell in everything from weight pull to obedience to agility per their pit fighting heritege the dogs had to be quick and agile.
