How much would you pay for a custom made dress?
How much would you pay for a dress that was custom made to your measurements? ( Cocktail or day dress)
I do custom work and I want to be paid a fair wage for fair work, so I hope people are willing to pay for quality! I hope most people are willing to pay me at least ten to fifteen dollars an hour, making a custom fitted dress isn’t easy! requires skill and craftsmanship, and is not an easy skill to learn. I don’t work for minimum wage. And I certainly don’t work for less than minimum wage. For some special hand worked specialty gowns I calculate labor charges far higher than that, depending on how fussy and picky the work is.
If you are asking because you want to start dressmaking as a business, don’t make the common mistake of undercharging. Set you rate as an hourly charge and stick to it, don’t fall for anyone saying “it’s only a little job so I don’t want to pay too much” For some reason many don’t understand the skill level involved in custom dressmaking. Charge what you feel the work is worth, not what the customer is willing to pay and many will try to get something for nothing.
